Slowing Down and Smallering for a New ME!

Slowing Down and Smallering for a New ME!

I have to honestly say the past 3 years business wise, personal wise & family wise have been such a whirlwind. From in 2010 my business grew to SIX TIMES what it had been in 2009 and 2009 had already DOUBLED 2008. I was in awe. I was and have been struggling to keep up ever since. I have felt constantly behind always wanting to do more, make more, be more, create more new products trying to fill everyone’s needs. The person’s needs I was ignoring most of the time were my own. In the past 3 years I have gained an additional 50 lbs on my already overweight 5′ 1″ body . I can’t even begin to tell you how many times in the past few years at shows someone would come to my booth and tell me they had been following my blog or heard from a friend about my products but just didn’t expect me to be so fat. I’ve mostly laughed it off saying things like “yeah 3 term pregnancies in 5 years will do that to you” or “I have no me time with 3 kids I’m homeschooling and an infant/toddler” when what I really wanted was to cry. Every single time I thought about a missed sale or connection because I was fat. It was time for a change. In the 20+ shows I did from 2009-2011 this is the ONLY picture I have of me with my booth, and the only reason is I was being photographed with the winners of the scavenger hunt for my herbal tea.

What does this mean for Lana Bella? Well I recently started project me aka Jenni loses 100+ lbs by my birthday next year. To accomplish this for my self-esteem, for my health (please lets not discuss how there are plenty of bigger people in better health than some skinny people because I know for ME being 100+ lbs overweight is not healthy for my mind. body or spirit), for my spirit, for my family, I’ll be pulling back a little. I’ll be saying No a little more. I’ll let things run out of stock once in a while. It’s honestly a lot of work keeping 50+ soaps in stock never mind the other products. I’ll be keeping more accurate inventory. So when you order a 3, 4, or 6 pack of soap and you want x of something please don’t be angry if you get an email back and I say I’m sorry I only have b left would you like a substitution? I’ll be setting aside only two days a month for making what I get done will have to be enough. I will add a third day in and get prepped better for holiday. I will warn you though there will only be 45 bars total of the holiday soaps I won’t be making more that gives you from Nov 1 (I’ll have them ready a little earlier this year) until they sell out to get them. If you know now that you want 12 of something for teachers gift or stockings please contact me soon so I can get in into my schedule.  Also know that because of the multiple shops and the single inventory I am human so there may be time when an order comes in that I haven’t adjusted inventory elsewhere I’m sorry in advance, and hey you might luck out and get an upgrade in size because of it :) .

I find it a bit ironic that when I started my business back in 2004 I had found an article on another diaper makers website about smallering. It made so much sense then and I tried to follow the ideals. Then in 2010 doing shows was a total new whirlwind for me. I am ever grateful for all those shows financially they really helped us to do so much with our family, that never would have happened otherwise. For now to move forward though I need to slow down. Somehow I have a 3.5 year old and nearly two teenagers, life is moving too fast and I don’t want to miss any more of their childhoods.

You might find me blogging more though there will be a lot of transformations happening. I’ve also started a second blog. I was on the fence about this for a very long time. I only wanted the responsibilities of maintaining one blog, however I wasn’t sure how much I was ready to share about my weight loss journey. In the past week its funny it has 9 days I’ve decided I’m pretty comfortable with sharing it all but I’ll spare you that journey and instead refer you to the other blog so you can follow my weightless transformation over there. If you have been struggling with it yourself please contact me I’d love to discuss with no obligations what I am doing and how excited I am. I’ve hated clothes shopping for a really long time however I’m really excited about buying exercise clothing go figure! I’m really excited about the changes and I hope we can all still work together.

This also means I am more than ever open to wholesale. I’d honestly rather spend those 2 making days a month making a really big order and put it to bed and have that much less responsibility.

Thank you for all of your support over the years and I hope in the future! Lets bring it!

December Recap

December Recap

For as busy as November was December was even busier! I hope you enjoy pictures!

December started with a revamp of all the body butter packaging.

Then came my last show of the year with the West Elm + Etsy event. I had a blast stepping outside my box display wise and using props from the store.

Then because Rory had gotten his cast off he was ready to start riding his bike. Finn couldn’t be out done so was happy to play on Jack’s scooter.

Then I had the kids paint some wood cut out birds as decorations for our tree as I didn’t think glass ornaments and hard tile floors would get along well. The kids decorated the tree and we were lucky to have Steve home to hang some lights on the outside. Even if the weather was 70+ it was beginning to feel a bit festive.

Lexi with all her culinary skills made us some fab chicken stir fry one night for dinner.

After the ornament painting the boys were on a painting kick.

As a special request I made some just plain scented bath salts.

My poor mail carrier this is what she saw on a pretty regular basis through November and December.

We decorated some gingerbread houses.

Jack turned 8! Can you believe it EIGHT!!! Pirate themed and an ice-cream cake!! All he wanted for weeks before was a cat so we searched for days on craigslist and scored this sweet little girl he aptly named Mason.

Then it was the first night of Chanukah  and Steve said the blessings for us over the phone and we had amazing sweet potato latkes which I forgot to get a picture of.

Then I decided to take on the insane task of making everyone in the family stockings. Not just any stockings stockings that would match their quilts to come in the future. So now just a week before Christmas while still packing and filling orders I had to nail down color schemes and actual quilt patterns for at least 5 people. Lexi’s actually used leftover pieces and an embroidery square from her quilt. Jack’s was actually easy I knew he wanted an orange zig zag.  Rory would want pink, Aidan blue, and Finn green, but to find patterns to match their personalities was hard.  In the end I think they came to great.

My crafting actually inspired Aidan to get his craft on too!

On Christmas Eve we were invited over to a friends home to celebrate Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) the food was AMAZING!!! There was mojito pork, rice, beans, fried plantains,  Tres Leches Cake and great friends! We had so much fun and like we belonged! THANK YOU Frances, Julie & Families!!

Then we hurried home to unwrap our traditional Christmas pajamas and climb into bed! If you look closely Aidan & Steve have matching pants.

Then we woke up and opened up some fun presents. That apron Lexi is holding up and the bedside organizer Steve is holding up those were made by Aidan back when he got his craft on. That tshirt I got Steve was really an joke because at EVERY show I do I get asked at least once if when I make soap if it is like the scene in Fight Club.

Then one day I finally followed my kids out with my camera to catch some shots of them all riding their new bikes they got earlier in the month for St Nicholas Day.

We wound up both the month & year with a visit from my Dad and a little New Year’s Eve swimming.

Packaging Revamp…Soap Bars

Packaging Revamp…Soap Bars

Well last we spoke I had a few ideas I was pondering. I bit the bullet and headed over to Etsy to hire someone to do the job after I realized it was beyond my skill to get it the way I wanted. After a couple hours of looking and getting sidetracked the way I often do when looking at Etsy I decided upon Meredith of Jack & Molly. I couldn’t be happier. She dealt with my non technical thing-a-ma-bob speech and walked me through how I needed to explain what I was trying to explain. I’m pretty sure she face palmed a few times at my sketches and wacky ideas. In the end though I’m so excited to unveil my new soap packaging!!! I’ve even taken her advice and started putting a clear coat on ALL my labels to help protect them.

So they have a piece of fabric, some decorative tissue tape (which may be changed later for a ribbon or eliminated when print fabric is used) and the new fancy label with a decorative swirl that will be changed depending on the bar of soap being wrapped!

While I was out there taking the pictures of the new labels this cuteness occurred that I thought I would also share with you as a special treat!

Finn posing after yelling “take picture me” .

Rory riding his bike not to be outdone on the cuteness factor.

So what do you think of the new packaging?

Packaging Revamp … 1st stage

Packaging Revamp … 1st stage

It’s a double edges sword for me. While I LOVE , I mean really love cute packaging I also know that my soap packaging probably ends up in the trash, and thus I have trouble designing it. In a perfect world cost wouldn’t matter. I would have some fancy schmancy packaging that didn’t matter how much it cost but until that day I’d prefer to pass on to you a larger bar of soap with minimal and as eco responsible packaging as possible.

Here is the current packaging minus the simple upgrade to the label at the bottom to include the website & new location.

The front of brainstorm number one. I was using cheap printer paper while brainstorming instead of the heavy weight card stock so you have to IMAGINE the white is really a nice ivory. The bar of soap is wrapped in corrugated cardboard then has a layer of card stock (printer paper for my brainstorming session) around it, on top of that a decorative tissue tape piece and a label with just my brand, the scent & the website.

The back has in a much larger font than currently used the ingredients of the bar and other important information.

Brainstorm number two used the corrugated cardboard, the rice paper that is part of our current packaging around it, the tissue tape from the previous brainstorm and the label currently being use on the bars of soap.

Brainstorm number three. Unbleached muslin wrapping the bar, bar flipped the other direction, tissue tape to add a decorative flair, card stock label with name & fragrance on the front. I’m not entirely happy with how the Lana Bella & the Almost Naked are spaced this is where my lacking graphic design skills irritate me.

Brainstorm number three continued, now you can see the front and the back. Still not entirely happy with the wording and spacing. Throwing my hands in the air and thinking about it for a few more days.

Its now been a week until this post I’ve been mostly ignoring it but need to really start thinking more about what I want those labels to be otherwise I think I like brainstorm 3′s basic packaging the best I could swap out different fabrics for different bars or make them fun.

What do you think? What project have you been working on that you may be struggling with?

Quilting Adventures… Lexi’s quilt

Quilting Adventures… Lexi’s quilt

Ok so last I updated you on the progress I showed you all the darling little dresses all embroidered up. Well most of the dresses anyway. So the next step in the adventure was to piece together the other blocks that would be surrounding the quilt. But to do that and figure it out I needed a plan. I had been looking at finished quilts on etsy and found a few I liked now to make it work with my dress squares. So I got out some graphing paper and designed a quilt.

Right I know exactly what you are thinking is she insane. and in hindsight I think I was a little. To go from making a quilt to designing a quilt on the fly was a lot, when it got really tricky was when I lost the plan midway through piecing the quilt together and forgot I had taken this very picture which would have saved me SOOOO much time!

So I decided I didn’t want just charm square in most of the blocks I needed to cut them in half and piece 4 of them together.

There you can see pairs of them pieced together. The more I played with them the more I fell in love with the Bliss palate.

Then I sewed the pairs together.

And then I had to sew boarders onto the long sides.

Next I laid everything out according to the drawing which somehow also went missing around this time. I don’t have any pictures of this step somehow.

The last step I had to do was to piece all the blocks & rows together. There was an audible sigh of relief at my house when this was finished. Then off the quilt top went to the lovely Tarabu (her etsy shop)  to be finished up. Hey I know my limitations.

We continued on packing moving unpacking and then one day a package arrived for miss Lexi.

So I ran up to her room with it and made her bed then I stood in the corner to get her picture when she saw it! Notice the excitement on the smidge of Rory you see on the edge.

Then she started petting the squares reminiscing about all the dresses.

There it is on her bed isn’t it AMAZING! Many many thanks to Ann Miller, Gigi, Mom, Tracy & Laura for helping to embroider the dresses,  Tasha for designing the lovely dresses to begin with, Tarabu for the most AMAZING job on finishing the quilt, and most of all Lexi for inspiring the quilt to begin with. I love you and the person you are!

The new house. Family and Kitchen

The new house. Family and Kitchen

The other major living area on the 1st floor is the kitchen/family room. Like the dining area its also located on the back of the house away from street noise (HA) and with two huge slider or window/door combos looking out onto the patio offers me the ability of sitting here on the couch writing this post while still being able to glance over at the boys trying to catch lizards.

Ok another combo room we will start with the before of the kitchen & family room. Note again the family room was the same white as everything else was.

AFTER!!

I went with sherwin williams heart of palm in here for the entire space and couldn’t be more delighted in how the color changes through out the day.

Ignore the clutter on the fridge we are still getting settled.  You can see the door to the TINY pantry to the left of the fridge and some of my vintage aprons hanging on the wall.

The rest of the kitchen because of the big open area that I’m standing in to take the picture it seems so much roomier than it is. The layout is different than what I’ve had ever before and in the right corner next to the stove is one of those big cabinets to hell. You know those ones that have a teeny opening but go all the way back to the wall. The sinks are also a bit shallow for what I’d like but all in all I like it. Most of the kitchen was painted by me with a 1 1/2 inch brush too because there really wasn’t much to paint.

From the family room into the kitchen you can see the big open area near the slider and the fridge.  Also the pictures were taken before Steve left but he was packing so thats his macbook bag there on the couch.

From the kitchen. With so many more of us now we added the old day bed into the mix for extra sitting and possible guest visiting.  Its still amusing to see how much spare space we have in the shelves here now because so much of all of our storage was over taken by the business before the move. The entire right side was shipping supplies, paper, ink, labels for products, etc. Now its magazines and some odds & ends for now.

The day bed. This is also the bedding I picked for Lexi a few summers ago when she was visiting her dad. The green of the sheets/quite are really similar to the wall paint at points of the day.

So there you have it. Now you have seen all of our main living areas. I’ll finish up with the 1st floor tomorrow. Then maybe a pause to finish up the series about Lexi’s quilt.

The new house. Dining and the learning/play room.

The new house. Dining and the learning/play room.

Ok I’ve taken a gazillion pictures of the new house. We are still unpacking and working things out but this is were we are at so far. I’ll go room by room over the next few days showing you all we have done.

We were pretty lucky in this adventure to have the use of the giant garage to store our boxes and so much of our stuff so the rooms were really empty while we painted. The rooms are in no way done they still need curtains but I’m taking my time and pondering what I want for them, and deciding on the decorative touches to complete things.  We also started with REALLY blank canvases like all white ceiling to trim.

This is a really big room for us. Its about the size of our entire first floor in our baltimore house, maybe not quite as long but about 1.5 times as wide and the natural light is AMAZING!

This is a picture of the play/learning area of the room though it was all white when we got here.

I know small picture, and yes that is an entire wall of mirrors.

Are you ready for the after. I am stunned on the change a little paint can’t make honestly. I’ve painted before but it was already after things were moved in or fairly settled before not as the main part of the transformation process.

The kids “genius bar”, the train table and toy storage. A small glimpse of the new craft table in the far left.

The other side of the room showing the train table, toy storage and the now unused coat rack. You can also see the front door & Finn’s car seat waiting to be installed in the suburban. There is that craft table again this time to the right.

BOOKS! To utilize space and cover up some of those mirrors we put the book shelves there. Yes you do actually see there of the 4×4 ikea expedit shelves there, and yes they are mostly full. Our dining table to the left and the craft table to the right.

The other angle you see the dining table to the right and on the opposite wall you see the 3 hanging wires for artwork, cards, pictures anything the kids hang really. You also see the two places that now need to be sanded and repainted because Rory & Finn tried to use one of the wires as a zipline. You also get a teeny glimpse into the kitchen & family room from here.

For the sake of having one picture from the same place as the original here you have it. You can see the craft table and Rory’s nest (papasan chair) from here. For perspective I was backed up to the train table taking this picture. There will be enough room for all the kids to sit at both craft and computer tables. They are currently short one bench because ikea has been out of stock.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into our living spaces. Oh the paint! I almost forgot the color is Chartreuse by sherwin williams custom tinted at 50%.

Simple. Gratitude. Calm.

Simple. Gratitude. Calm.

Things are currently moving at whirlwind speed at our home. House hunting (still), packing these orders just as quickly as I can. Updating etsy, getting everything listed here at lanabellasoap.com, homeschooling, organizing for said move which in reality is about 6 weeks away, prepping for the few shows I have before I leave.

This very morning I thought while drinking my coffee how I wished I was sitting on the porch at the farm in a rocker looking out over that place that brought me so much peace when I was in my teens. You see that fence, that one there, the one closest to us? I helped my Uncle Ray build that fence. There is a barn back there over my left hand shoulder behind me you can’t see he let me put a few nails in that too. I remember the day during hay season something was wrong and Lois and I going down and flipping that darn hay field there by hand. I remember Uncle Jack telling me how to drive the tractor “the right way”. I remember lifting those bails of hay and getting them into the barn. Ahh the smell of hay in a barn! Mostly I remember the laughter, the peace, the togetherness of those days in the early 90′s on the farm. Those memories get me through even the craziest of days.

What I’m working on- A Quilt

What I’m working on- A Quilt

What I’m working on now is a little different than you might expect. About a year or so ago Lexi asked if we could make a quilt together. At the time I thought it was a little beyond what we had time for but she really wanted to make something so we made her a cute little wristlet.

I was really impressed with her attention to the project. She has even made a bunch more as gifts and wants to open her own etsy shop as a project for school next year.

Well this year she asked for a bedroom update, you know because at 11.5 she’s not a “kid” anymore. So away went the day bed she has slept in since she started climbing out of her crib at 18 months and in came the bed she picked from ikea in a “grown up” full size. So I started looking at bedding and then thought this was the perfect opportunity to make a quilt. We started with some embroidered squares that I fell in love with when seeing them on etsy one day. Aren’t these dresses delightful?

If you want to score these and the other 3 little designs stop on over to the a little sweetness etsy shop.

I can’t wait to share how the quilt progresses with you!

Even more sneak peeks!

I know things have seemed even more quiet than usual however have no fear I’ve been really hard at work. There will be some more changes coming in the very near future and I hope to let you in on all those secrets soon. For now you can see all the new things I’ve been crafting away for your pleasure!

Pink Boy Princesses

Pink Boy Princesses

The whole boys loving pink is getting quite a bit of publicity these days. I’m on the fence about it all. Having a pink loving ballet dancing boy princess I understand it. However I also am not doing it because I relate to a celebrity or want my 15 minutes or want to exploit my son in anyway. I am here to help him pave the way, to help others who are in a situation now pave the way, to CHANGE things so maybe he won’t have to suffer quite so much. I do this as nothing more than Rory’s mother. I do this for love.

This was recently brought to the surface again from a place I least expected it. A mother was asking for help because her boy like mine likes pink, princesses and playing with the girls. When she asked him why he simply said because boys don’t fight. Then she said “My husband and I are very strict on this issue and most of the time try to not to allow him to do girlish things hoping that this might change his attitude.can we do anything to prevent it. we are really worried that this might affect his future sexual identity. please help.”

WHOA! WHAT?!?!

I drafted my reply :”This deeply offends me  on many many levels. What is wrong with him liking pink? Will it hurt anyone if for a year or 6 months or 5 years he likes pink or barbie or princesses? Will it make him less of a man down the road to be caring and considerate kind empathetic in ways that many women complain that they wish their husbands, boyfriends partners were? Gender roles disgust me. If it were your little girl doing things that boys do like become educated, vote, work outside the home, become a teacher, doctor lawyer president would you still care? As recently at the 1950′s pink has historically been am masculine color and blue a calmer color reserved for girls.

I see my 4.5 yo boys love for pink no different than his 7 yo brothers need to wear orange for 2 straight years and honestly Rory is less intense and dramatic about it. He is my softer gentler boy. He takes ballet. He loves it it makes him happy so happy the teacher has said he truly brightens the class including the girl who used to push and shove in the class who doesn’t anymore. He was a “boy fairy princess” for Halloween I admire his creativity.

What right do I have to ever make him feel his beliefs are wrong? What kind of a parent would I be to make him feel any less than accepted for who he is! He wants to grow up and be a ballerina and a mommy so he can wear babies in slings and have snuggle time and read stories in nests. I can’t wait! And so what if in 20 years hens the “mommy” I’ll be there to love and support him. He doesn’t put gender roles on mommy & daddy other than mommy is comfort mommy takes care of us. Daddy can be abrupt and stern.

Future sex identity? Sounds to me more like some homophobic fear talking. Would it really be the end of the world if he is gay and happy? Or Would you prefer that he feel unaccepted and shut out in his own home by the people in the world who are supposed to love him the most during adolescence when things are confusing enough and rather than disappoint you or other fears kills himself instead?”

Rory in pink Opening his "the only boy in ballet class" book

Should I have left it like that maybe not but I really wanted to make a point. I offended her. I think I probably meant to. I meant her to get mad to fight for her child to put on her mama bear big girl panties and protect her child to love him to fight for him. She is from Dubai she is using culture as an “excuse” for her behavior. I understand that homosexuality is not always accepted in other places and then I thought is it REALLY accepted here in the good ole US of A? BUT, BUT, BUT before we even get that far lets remember that we are also discussing a little boy here he is FOUR! FOUR! They don’t do things at this point to be gay or straight. They just do things to not hurt, to not feel challenged, or ridiculed.  I sent off a second response. A response that in all honesty I cried while drafting. A response that has since moved me to tears reading it to a few friends over the phone. Friends that I know will be right there by my side loving my children and fighting for them as I will be for theres. Friends I thanks my lucky stars on a daily basis for having. Friends who urged me to share with you.

“This entire thing has been bothering me since I saw it. I was up pacing at midnight and couldn’t sleep til about 2 am and was up again at 4 still bothered by it. My heart breaks for children who are not accepted for whatever the reason by their family. Be it a father who is unaccepting of his daughter’s dyslexia. A mother who doesn’t understand how food is interfering with her children’s behavior. A sibling who torments his brother for liking to cook.

I was not intending to attack I was intending to ask tough questions to say the things often left unsaid. I understand cultural differences it does not mean I have to like them and I will challenge them. An example: My fathers family is from the old south my family did own slaves. Its a truth. It disgusts me. We live in the inner city of Baltimore we are the only white family on our block. A family member came to visit a year ago and asked us how we liked living around a bunch of niggers I nearly threw up. It was not a word my children had heard and if they had definitely not in that context. I explained that we lived around a bunch of hard working, working class families trying to do the best for their children and families. That it was hard enough trying to teach our children not to judge without someone they loved and respect to act in such a way  and in my home I would not tolerate such language and I don’t.

I was very upset and posted a comment on my facebook page and a wonderful dear friend responded “The funny thing is, this isn’t solely about parenting. Rejecting the feminine, whether it’s attitudes or interest, in men/boys is plain old misogyny. I find it shocking to hear that there are so many femininity-hating mothers out there. FEMININITY IS NOT A CURSE OR AN INDICATION OF ONE’S SEXUALITY.” I hadn’t though of it that way at all, a new point of view.

Nada you asked a question I know my response upset you and I’m not entirely sorry it upset you. I believe our children are here to teach us life lessons. To teach us ALL life lessons. My 17 year old daughter like you and your husband fears that my acceptance of my pink princess loving boy and  is also worried that it will affect his future sexual identity. Ironically he is her favorite of her little brothers and we have had many an argument not speaking for a few days over it my response to her was that no matter what I will love him I will support him I will fight for him. If he is a pink princess ballet loving construction worker with a gay lover I will love him. If he is an orange cowboy monster truck train loving ballerina hairdresser with a wife and kids I will love him. There is absolutely nothing in this world he could do that will stop me from loving him. I shared this with my daughter I said to her many of the things I said in the email. That I would rather him be alive and happy than dead because he was miserable and scared. I think she finally understood. For christmas she bought him a princess board game and pink pajamas. He hugged her and said “thank you brenna for loving the pink me”. I sobbed. Though she had never really said anything to him he knew. She is now a member of his boy princess club. She will fight for him she will love him. He taught her that pink, gay, straight, brown, orange it doesn’t matter WHO we are matters.

SPD has taught me a lesson. I was TERRIFIED of having a boy like my stepson. He was wild, crazy, a race car. He was constantly knocking into me. Knocked me down the stairs when I was pregnant with Jack and didn’t even realize or care. I prayed, I begged, I needed a girl. Girls were calmer, gentle, reasonable like my lexi was. Instead I was gifted with this boy who would make my wild stepson seem calm. I was given a boy. A boy who doesn’t feel pain.  A boy who runs into walls, climbs the highest towers, has never gotten dizzy, who shows no fear or mercy. He is also the kindest and deepest loving of all my children. He inspires me and terrifies me on a daily basis. I homeschool for him. He is a mustang wild and free I will not have him broken. Story time is often accomplished while he jumps on anything or everything or is hanging upside down off the side of his bunk bed. I used to watch him climb frozen in fear that he would get hurt. Now I watch on occasion with pride (often i don’t watch because i don’t want him to be worried about me watching him) he is happy when pushing his body to its limits I remember being that girl on the back of a horse riding faster jumping higher until i learned from others fears. I don’t want him to stop on account of mine. He pushes me to new limits that I didn’t think i had in me. I learn I adapt I love.

Love and acceptance thats all I want for children not just mine but all.

I love that you asked for help. I hope you can accept that I was not trying to judge but ask tough questions to give you a place to accept him that it really isnt the end of the world. Just love.”

Honestly I don’t know how to end this post. I don’t think its about homosexuality at all just about gender roles and assumptions and frankly I wish in so many ways children were sexless until I don’t know 10 then it wouldn’t matter if our boys were ballerinas or girls played soldier they would just be children free to explore, learn, play and most of all just be loved.

Family Life

Family Life

She has been home for a week now and as much as I’d like to say we have done amazing things and are ahead of schedule I can’t. Due to project reorganize the entire house (which honestly is STILL going on nearly a month later) she has been having a hard time finding and/or putting things away. But she is HOME! I missed that girl. Lexi changed so much over the 6 weeks she was gone, I swear she grew 4 inches and really started blossoming from that little girl I sent away into a wonderful young lady.

Counting Down…

Counting Down…

lexi and finn

Its been a long long summer here at our home made to feel even longer by having Lexi my 11 year old daughter gone for most of it. I didn’t realize/took for granted how much her young girl hands helped both our family and the business to run smoother. It is often Lexi who pulls the products for your orders in a timely fashion because its not as easy to do with a 6, 4 and 1 1/2 year old as one might think. She also helps keep inventory of products so I don’t accidentally run out on something popular or make something only I like. Don’t worry I’m not running a sweat shop it was something we agreed to as part of homeschooling this past year and she gets paid in both craft and money.

The good news is she will be home August 23! I’m so excited so much has changed in our home while she has been gone I’ve been on an organizing, decluttering frenzy. I really can’t wait for her to get home to start school again. There is so much I have planned for this fall sewing, baking, crafting, painting, photography and we will be continuing with the theme of prairie life as well.

In order to spend more time with my family though after the whirlwind spring season I’ll be taking on a lighter load of a fall schedule show wise though because I really missed them. To offset this I’ll be offering more discounts in my Etsy shop.

101 things in 1001 days

So I stumbled across someone who posted about making a list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. Then with a little google I see all these wonderful lists out there they are inspiring and overwhelming all at the same time! Can I do it? Will I fail miserably? How many could I accomplish? How could my list grow? However when you think about it its like 1 thing a weekish even me in my worst procrastination could manage to get something done each week couldn’t I? So who is with me? Oh I guess I need to make my list can that be the first thing?

The Mission:
Complete 101 preset tasks in a period of 1001 days.
The Criteria:
Tasks must be specific (ie. no ambiguity in the wording) with a result that is either measurable or clearly defined. Tasks must also be realistic and stretching (ie. represent some amount of work on my part).

Why 1001 Days?
Many people have created lists in the past – frequently simple goals such as New Year’s resolutions. The key to beating procrastination is to set a deadline that is realistic. 1001 Days (about 2.75 years) is a better period of time than a year, because it allows you several seasons to complete the tasks, which is better for organising and timing some tasks such as overseas trips or outdoor activities.
